Richard McKinley has practiced law in Polk County, Florida for thirty-five years. His primary areas of practice are Family and Criminal Law. He also represents injured parties in select Personal Injury cases.
Richard was born in Gainesville, Florida in 1955. He was raised in Babson Park, south of Lake Wales, and graduated from Lake Wales Senior High School, Class of 1973. He graduated from Eckerd College, Class of 1977 and obtained a Juris Doctor from the University of Florida in December 1979. He was admitted to the Florida Bar, summer of 1980.
Richard worked 1980 until June 1984 as an Assistant Public Defender in the Tenth Judicial Circuit. At the Public Defender’s Office which was supervised by Jerry Hill, our current State Attorney, Richard supervised the Sebring branch office then returned to Bartow where he acted as Chief of one of three felony trial divisions. At the Public Defenders Office, Richard tried over fifty felony jury trials, and has continued to handle jury trials in both State and Federal court throughout his career.
In 1984 , Richard left the Office of the Public Defender to enter private practice. He started private practice as an associate with Clinton A. Curtis, then with Curtis and Alexander beginning 1985. In 1986, Richard opened his own practice, and has continued as a shareholder of his practice since then. Richard has represented thousands of divorce clients, both husbands and wives. The representation has spanned all levels of complexity, including uncontested divorces, high wage earner professionals, citrus and cattle farmers, developers, doctors, and lawyers.
Richard served as Chair of The Florida Bar Grievance Committee 10A in 1990 and 1991.
Richard understands that each case is important to the party, that divorce is a most important and sometimes difficult personal and financial event for the client.
Richard is a member of The Florida Bar, the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, Florida Academy of Criminal Defense Lawyers, the Polk County Trial Lawyers Association, and the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers.
